Well deserved recognition. He made an extraordinary contribution to the amateur astrnomers. I still use Burnham's Celestial Handbook. I wish I've had the chance to shake his hand.

As was implied in one of the audience questions, Bob might have persisted at Lowell if he had had the computer knowledge necessary for the way astronomy was being done at that time, and that it wasn't available to him. Of course it was available both at Lowell and at NAU but, sadly, he wasn't willing to learn these systems. In fact Norm Thomas stated more clearly that Bob could have had an astronomy job at Lowell if he had learned these systems.

If the Meteor shower is at the end of this month i wonder is i seen the vary beginning of it a few hours ago. Heading west on the I10 in Tonopah. Single fireball. Slightly left of the interstate, nearly straight down but Slightly right. It started white then went yellow and finally green.

I worked with Robert and Norm and for Henry Giclas for year in the late 60s. Robert was kind and generous in sharing his knowledge. It is my understanding that Lowell made a substantial effort to continue Robert's employment but that, in particular, Robert resisted learning the computerization that was coming in. I'm sure Henry Giclas did what he could. One time he saved my job. I'm sure he tried to do the same for Robert.

Thank you for putting this on. Bob certainly deserved it. I still have the Handbook. I worked with him in 1968-1969. I had a job at Lowell as a programmer and when there wasn't enough of that I would work on measuring the position of objects on the plates Bob and Norm were making. Bob was always available for mentoring and I wish I had had more time to take advantage of that. Halcyon days. Confession, one night I pulled out the Pluto discovery plate and looked it over. Fortunately I didn't drop it.

Cody, I might add something for you to look up. (you seemed shocked at where astronomers took a pee, on long nights out in the cold observatory) Most world war two aircraft had a "relief" tube under the seat. Urine exited from the rear of the aircraft into the slipstream and evaporated. No rear cabin potty, as we might expect today. It wasn't inherently sexist I suppose. It just reflected the majority gender of crew. Maybe Lowell evolved the same way. Female staff had to run and find a pine tree... Staying warm had to be a challenge. But the "heavy" nature of the telescope hardware has been well illustrated by your interview with Jeff. Kudos to keeping it historically accurate and blending with modern imagery cameras and sensors. Keep up the great content!
